We had been living in Asia for a year when time came for us to return for a period of time for our son to finish school. Our church mission organisation asked us to join their team for the season we were to be back in Australia which meant a relocation to Melbourne, a city we had never lived in before. Knowing it was for a season, we wanted our kids to feel at home as much as possible so told them that they could choose the church to attend.
Not only did we have to find the right right church, but we had to find the right house to rent, one that we could afford on our small support budget. Every place we looked at that met our budget was hardly fit to live in. We were not fussy, after all we had been living in a third world country, but we wanted it to be at least comfortable for our children. After looking through many such houses, we came across one that looked good but was out of price range. We went and looked at it with a, ‘just for fun’ attitude, but as soon as we walked in, I really wanted it.
I said to the Lord, ‘I love this place.’ He spoke directly into my spirit and said, ‘Deb, do you want it?’ I said; ‘Yes Lord, I really want it, but how can we possibly afford this place?’ God simply repeated the same thing again, ‘Deb do you want it?’ I said, ‘Yes. Yes Lord I want it.’ He said; ‘Answer the application form completely honestly, don’t leave anything out.’ To get a rental, we had to apply giving our details of what we did. How much money we earned and proof of what we earned. We wrote that we were missionaries and we had a support amount but were raising more support. The proof were support slips from our mission agency. That was it. That was all we could do. It seemed impossible in the natural and besides the issue of not having a steady job or income to go with it, there were several other couples looking at the place also.
Although it seemed crazy to believe for it, God had spoken and we were at peace. Within hours, we had a phone call from the agent to say the house was ours. The first miracle had occurred. Now we just needed the second one to come about, the money to pay for it.
Around the same time as finding the house, we also found the right church. We had only been there a couple of weeks when a young couple approached us and told us that God had spoken to them a few months before to take the challenge of living on one income and giving one income to missions. They told us that God had directed their attention to us and for one year, to give us one of their wages. Not only was this enough to pay for our rent, but it allowed us to live comfortably during the year we were in Australia.
Don’t discount God’s voice, the Holy Spirit’s whisper when He tells you something that sounds impossible. If it is God, He has it all worked out. When you see it unfold, it will build your faith.
There is more to this story so stay tuned for the next chapter.
