He is always with us

I was asked recently by someone how to get close to God. How many times have we heard that question asked? I am sure it’s a question we have asked ourselves at some point. However the truth is, it is easy to get close to God. In fact, it just takes reaching out and touching Him because He is already so close. The Word of God confirms this fact so clearly.

Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, 10 even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast. 11 If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me,” 12 even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you. Psalm 139: 7-12 (NIV)

All we need to do is recognise His presence and step into it.

What stops us from stepping in?

We can tend to have a false narrative about God, believing that He doesn’t like us or want to be close to us if we have not been perfect that day, that week, that month, or that year even. Our self talk scenarios are what prevents us from stepping into His presence without reserve. Scenarios such as; ‘I haven’t prayed much lately,’ or, ‘I haven’t read the Bible as much as I should.’ ‘I spoke badly about that person today,’ or, ‘I sometimes reacted harshly with my family instead of responding in a calm way.’ ‘God surely doesn’t want me entering His throne room like this. I am not worthy enough to come into His presence.’

I am sure you know what I am talking about, but as many of you already know, those thoughts either come from our own conditioning or the enemy reminding us of our faults. They do not come from God. God made a way for us to enter into presence by His grace through Jesus Christ. God loves us without reservation and He eagerly waits for our company. Why? Because He loves us, and He loves us because it is the essence of who He is.

And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. 39 No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8: 38-39 (NIV)

Come as you are, faults and all. Step into His presence, knowing His acceptance of you is genuine. Where there is need for repentance, we can come humbly into His throne room, acknowledge our sin, asking for God’s forgiveness and for Him to grow us to be more like Him, and then move on.

Oh, put God to the test and see how kind He is! See for yourself the way His mercies shower down on all who trust in Him. Psalm 34:8 (Living Bible)

You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand. Psalm 16:11 (NIV)

God is closer than you think.

Trust God in your journey.
